NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION OFFICE OF INSPECTOR GENERAL OFFICE OF INVESTIGATIONS CLOSEOUT MEMORANDUM Case Number: A13080081 Page 1 of 1 2 The Subject1 was the primary author on a publication that was the topic of a blog discussion of apparently fabricated figures. The publication cited NSF support. A university investigation established that the Subject knowingly fabricated the images; the Subject denied doing so. The university recommended expulsion of the Subject without his graduate degree, and the Subject left the university. Although the publication acknowledges NSF support, a separate analysis by the university concluded that no federal funds were used to support the published research. The absence of NSF support removes our direct jurisdiction as a matter of research misconduct. We note that the conclusions of the university report, and the finding of research misconduct by the Subject, have been publicly disclosed. This case is closed with no further action taken.
