NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION OFFICE OF INSPECTOR GENERAL OFFICE OF INVESTIGATIONS CLOSEOUT MEMORANDUM Case Number: 1-16-0121-0 Page 1of1 We initiated an investigation into allegations that a university 1 misused participant support funds on an NSF grant. 2 Our investigation found that funds intended for participant support were used to pay for senior personnel travel costs. When the university was made aware that improper travel costs had been charged to the grant, it removed those costs from the grant and submitted a revised annual project report reflecting the student and junior faculty that were supported with NSF grant funds. Additionally, the university updated its financial aid guidance for this project to ensure that NSF funds would pay for appropriate participant travel in the future. We issued a letter to the university advising of its obligation to follow rules and regulations that apply to NSF awards, specifically with regards to participant support. This case is closed with no further action taken. NSF OIG Fonn 2 (11/02)
