NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION OFFICE OF INSPECTOR GENERAL OFFICE OF INVESTIGATIONS CLOSEOUT MEMORANDUM Case Number: I13100056 Page 1 of 1 We received an allegation that a PI1 on NSF awards was spending significant time away from his university, and charging travel to his NSF awards that was not within the scope of the awards. We reviewed records from all of the PI’s open awards and determined there were travel expenses charged to the awards beyond that which was budgeted. We queried the university, which carried out a review of the PI’s travel and ultimately decided to return to NSF any funds that were used on travel that could not be clearly justified as legitimate travel within the scope of the PI’s awards. Further, the university informed us that it would prospectively increase oversight of the PI’s award charges. Finally, the university informed us that it will ensure that the PI includes all expected travel in his submitted budgets and that he notifies NSF program officers of any changes from those submitted budgets. This case is closed with no further action taken. 1 NSF OIG Form 2 (11/02)
